Key Responsibilities

  • Safeguard significant locations, including The White House Complex, The Vice President's Residence, The Main Treasury Building and Annex, and foreign embassies throughout the Washington, D.C. area.
  • Accompany and protect the President, Vice President, and foreign dignitaries during official travel.
  • Fulfill protective duties as mandated by federal law in Title 18, United States Code, Section 3056A.

Eligibility Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
  • A valid U.S. driver's license is required.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old by the time of application and must be under 40 at the time of referral. Exceptions may apply for those with prior federal law enforcement service.
  • Must be able to carry and utilize a firearm; maintaining proficiency is necessary.
  • Uncorrected visual acuity must be no worse than 20/100 in both eyes. Corrected visual acuity should be 20/20 in each eye.
  • Hearing loss must not exceed 25 decibels in either ear at specific frequency ranges, and applicants must be able to hear a whispered voice from 15 feet away.
  • A drug test is required before appointment, with random testing during employment.
  • Must successfully complete 12 weeks of rigorous training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA or Artesia, NM, followed by 17 weeks of specialized training at the James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel, MD.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must certify registration with the Selective Service System or claim exemption.
